In everyday terms, it is the modern replacement for the traditional fuse box.
Age alone does not automatically mean a consumer unit is unsafe. Some older installations can remain serviceable if they have been properly maintained and tested. However, an older board is more likely to provide limited protection and may not be suitable after an extension, rewire, new kitchen, electric shower, EV charger or other significant electrical work.
Common reasons to arrange an inspection include a consumer unit with old-style fuse wire, cracked or damaged accessories, missing blanking plates, scorch marks, frequent tripping, buzzing noises, or a warm smell around the board. A unit installed on a combustible backing, such as wood, may also require attention depending on its age, condition and installation arrangement.

Arc fault detection devices, or AFDDs, may be recommended in certain situations. These devices are intended to detect dangerous arcing faults that conventional protective devices may not identify. Their suitability depends on the building type, use of the premises, circuit design and current wiring regulations.
The aim is not to fill a board with equipment for the sake of it. It is to design protection that is appropriate for the installation and provides sensible fault separation, safety and reliability.

A compliant consumer unit replacement is not a simple swap. It involves isolation, inspection, testing, installation and certification. The work should be carried out by a qualified, competent electrician who can assess the whole installation rather than focusing only on the board.
Before work begins, the electrician should establish the condition of the incoming supply, earthing and bonding arrangements. Main protective bonding connects metal services, such as gas and water pipework where applicable, to the electrical earthing system. The correct solution depends on test results, not guesswork.
Very old properties may contain rubber, fabric-covered or VIR cable. These cable types can deteriorate with age and heat, leaving brittle insulation that is no longer reliable. Where significant deterioration is found, a partial or full rewire may be safer and more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
A consumer unit also cannot increase the capacity of the incoming electricity supply. If a property is adding high-load equipment, such as an EV charger, electric heating or commercial machinery, the electrician may need to assess load demand and advise whether supply-related work is necessary.
