At Blackpool & Fylde Electrical Services Ltd, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Whether you’re moving into a new home or simply want to keep your property safe for your family, following some basic electrical safety measures can make all the difference. Here are my top tips to help you stay safe and avoid common electrical hazards at home.
1. Book Regular Electrical Inspections
Arrange for an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) every five years or when moving into a new property. Regular checks help spot hidden faults before they become hazards.
2. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Flickering lights, burning smells, buzzing sockets, or frequent tripped breakers are all signs of electrical issues. Don’t wait—contact a qualified electrician as soon as you notice anything unusual.
3. Avoid Overloading Sockets
Plugging too many devices into one socket can cause overheating and increase fire risk. Use extension leads safely and avoid daisy-chaining adapters.
4. Leave Repairs to the Professionals
DIY electrical work is risky and can often be dangerous. Always use a qualified electrician for anything beyond changing a lightbulb or resetting a breaker to keep yourself and your property safe.
5. Test Your Smoke and Fire Alarms Regularly
Make sure your alarms are working and fitted in key areas of your home. Test them monthly and replace batteries as needed. If you’re unsure, ask your electrician to check them during your next inspection.
6. Test RCD Buttons Every Six Months
Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are essential for protecting against electric shock. Press the test button on your RCDs every six months to make sure they trip as expected. If they don’t, call a qualified electrician immediately.
Electrical safety doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require attention and the right expertise. If you have any concerns about your home’s electrics, or just want peace of mind, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to help with inspections, repairs, and advice—your safety is our priority.
