This fault finding guide explains the safe first checks to make, the warning signs that require urgent action, and when the fault needs a qualified electrician rather than further investigation.
Electrical faults are not always dramatic. Some develop slowly through worn accessories, overloaded circuits, deteriorating cables, loose connections or ageing equipment. Early action can reduce disruption, prevent damage to appliances and, more importantly, protect people from electric shock and fire.
Start with safety, not guesswork
Do not remove socket fronts, open the consumer unit, disconnect fixed wiring or work on live electrical equipment. A fault can remain dangerous even where power appears to be off, and the cause may sit elsewhere on the circuit.
If you notice burning smells, smoke, sparks, buzzing from electrical equipment, scorch marks, a hot socket or visible damage to cables, switch off the supply at the consumer unit only if it is safe to do so. If several sockets have lost power, look at the consumer unit for a tripped protective device. If none has tripped, the problem could still involve a loose connection, a failed accessory or a fault on the ring or radial circuit. A socket that feels warm, crackles, smells burnt or has discoloured plastic should not be used, even if it still supplies power.

Lights flicker, dim or fail intermittently
A single failed light may simply need a compatible replacement lamp. However, flickering across several lights, dimming that coincides with appliances starting, or lights that cut in and out can point to a loose connection or a supply issue. These symptoms deserve attention, especially in older homes and commercial premises with altered or extended circuits.
LED lamps can also flicker where they are incompatible with older dimmer switches. This is usually less urgent than a burning smell or repeated tripping, but it still needs the correct solution. Replacing lamps at random may not resolve a dimmer, transformer, driver or wiring fault.
If lights are affected after water ingress, a roof leak or bathroom condensation, do not assume they will dry out safely. Moisture can damage connections and insulation inside fittings and ceiling spaces.
An appliance causes a shock, tingling or burning smell
Stop using it immediately. A mild tingle from a metal appliance is not normal, and neither is a plug that becomes hot during ordinary use. Switch the appliance off, unplug it by gripping the plug rather than pulling the cable, and do not reconnect it to test it again.
The issue may be the appliance, its lead, its plug or the socket circuit. A competent electrician can test the circuit and advise whether the appliance needs separate repair or replacement. Outdoor power has stopped working

The correct repair depends on testing, not assumptions.
