
Why Does Electrics Keep Tripping in Your Home?

A consumer unit that trips once can be inconvenient. One that keeps cutting power is a warning that should not be ignored. If you are asking, “why does electrics keep tripping?”, the short answer is that a protective device has detected a fault, overload or potentially unsafe condition and has disconnected the supply to reduce the risk of electric shock, overheating or fire.
The sensible response is not to keep resetting it until it stays on. Why does electrics keep tripping?
Most modern consumer units contain different types of protective devices. An MCB, or miniature circuit breaker, normally trips when a circuit is overloaded or there is a short circuit. An RCD, or residual current device, trips when it detects electricity leaking from the circuit - a condition that can indicate damaged insulation, moisture ingress or a faulty appliance. Some boards use RCBOs, which provide both forms of protection on individual circuits.
Knowing which switch has moved to the off position gives an electrician a useful starting point, but it does not confirm the fault on its own. A circuit may appear to reset normally until a particular appliance is used, rain affects an outside fitting, or a cable warms up under load. Intermittent faults are common and still require proper investigation.
An overloaded circuit
Overloading happens when too many high-demand items are used from one circuit at the same time. Kettles, microwaves, portable heaters, tumble dryers, washing machines and electric showers all draw substantial current. In a home with limited socket circuits, it is easy to put several of these loads on the same supply without realising it.
A tripping MCB may occur as soon as another appliance is switched on, or after several minutes of use. Extension leads and multi-way adaptors can make the situation worse because they allow more equipment to be connected without increasing the circuit’s capacity. The answer is not a larger breaker. The cable, accessories and circuit design must all be suitable for the load.
Commercial settings can face the same issue. A change in equipment, extra workstations, portable heating or new kitchen appliances can put a previously adequate circuit under strain. A qualified electrician can assess the demand and advise whether the solution is to redistribute loads, install additional circuits or upgrade parts of the installation.
A faulty appliance or lead
An appliance fault is one of the most frequent reasons an RCD trips. Damage can develop inside a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, fridge, power tool or charger, even when the item looks fine from the outside. Flexes, plugs and extension leads can also become worn, crushed or damaged.
If the trip happened when a particular item was plugged in or switched on, unplug that item and do not use it again until it has been checked. With dry hands and no signs of damage or burning, you can unplug portable appliances from the affected sockets and try resetting the protective device once. If it remains on, reconnect items one at a time, allowing enough time for each appliance to run.
If the device trips again when one item is connected, leave it unplugged. If it still trips with everything unplugged, the fault is more likely to be in the fixed wiring, a socket, a light fitting or another permanently connected item. Do not dismantle sockets, plugs, consumer units or appliances to investigate further.
Damaged wiring, sockets or light fittings
Electrical wiring deteriorates with age, accidental damage, heat and poor previous workmanship. Older installations may have cable insulation that has become brittle, while DIY alterations and hidden screws or nails can damage cables within walls. Loose connections at sockets, switches and junctions can also overheat and cause nuisance tripping or more serious faults.
Lighting circuits are often overlooked. A failed LED driver, damaged pendant fitting, bathroom light, loft connection or outside light can trip an RCD. Where the problem appears after using a particular light switch, leave that light off and seek advice from an electrician.
Properties close to the coast can also be exposed to damp conditions and salt-laden air, which may contribute to corrosion in external accessories over time. This does not mean every trip is caused by the weather, but it is one reason why outdoor sockets, garden lighting, garage supplies and external cables should be installed and maintained correctly.
Water or moisture ingress
Water and electricity do not mix. An RCD that trips after heavy rain, when an outside light comes on, or when a bathroom fan operates may be responding to moisture entering an accessory, cable or appliance. Garden equipment, external sockets, shed supplies and outdoor lighting are common areas to check visually from a safe distance.
Do not touch damaged outdoor equipment, attempt to dry electrical fittings with a heater, or repeatedly restore power to a circuit that trips in wet conditions. A qualified electrician can test the insulation resistance of the circuit and identify whether the problem is an external fitting, cable route, junction or connected equipment.
A fault in the consumer unit or protective device
Although less common, the consumer unit itself can be part of the problem. A worn or damaged breaker, loose connection, overheating terminal or outdated board may affect the reliability and safety of the installation. This is especially relevant where a consumer unit has been altered over several years, where there are signs of scorching, or where the board lacks modern RCD protection.
Protective devices are designed to trip. Their operation is often evidence that they are doing their job. However, an electrician should establish whether the device has responded to a genuine fault or whether there is an issue with the device, its connections or the circuit it protects. Replacing a breaker without testing is not a safe diagnosis.
What you can safely do before calling an electrician
Start by noting what has gone off. Has the whole property lost power, or only the sockets, lights, cooker, shower or garage? Check whether a single breaker, an RCD or the main switch is off. Make a note of any appliance being used, recent work carried out, weather conditions and whether the fault is constant or intermittent.
You can also unplug portable appliances on the affected circuit and look for obvious signs of damage, such as a crushed lead, cracked plug, loose socket faceplate, water near electrical equipment or a burning smell. Keep children and pets away from the area and leave anything suspicious disconnected.
Avoid these common mistakes: do not keep resetting a tripping device; do not use extension leads as a permanent fix for overloaded sockets; and do not fit a higher-rated fuse or breaker to stop a circuit tripping. Each of these actions can remove the warning while leaving the underlying hazard in place.
When a tripping circuit is an emergency
Some electrical faults need urgent attention rather than a routine appointment. Switch off the supply if it is safe to do so and contact an emergency electrician if you notice any of the following:
Burning smells, smoke, buzzing, crackling or visible sparks.
Scorch marks, melted plastic or a consumer unit that feels unusually hot.
Water entering or sitting near electrical equipment.
Repeated tripping that leaves essential safety systems, refrigeration, heating controls or business-critical equipment without power.
If there is an immediate risk of fire, leave the building and call the emergency services. Never use water on an electrical fire.

Electrical fault finding is more than identifying the switch that has tripped. It involves safely isolating circuits and using calibrated test equipment to check continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance and RCD operation where appropriate.
